As the Social Studies Consultant for the Tennessee Department of Education from 2000-2004, I made great efforts to make sure that First Tennessee was well represented throughout the Social Studies Framework and thus to all K-12 Tennesseans. I simply fell in love with the mountains, its inhabitants, and its history.
Walking around Jonesborough, I hear echos from the past and can almost feel its historical beauty. Jonesborough is the oldest town in Tennessee, established in 1779, a full established seventeen years before Tennessee was granted statehood. Granted by the General Assembly of North Carolina as the county seat of Washington County, the town was named after a North Carolina legislator Willie Jones. Jones supported westward expansion. At Charles Robertson's home, John Carter, Andrew Greer, William Cobb, Jacob Womack, George Russell, John Sevier and James Stuart developed the plan and location of Jonesborough's courthouse. As seen in the distant left in this photo- simply gorgeous.
